Hey

So.

Mountain Dew is a thing of the past. I have conquered the addiction. I have triumphed. This is good.

I'm back on Effexor. Thank God.

Am I losing weight? No, not so much. Do I care? No. Not really. Being back on the Effexor has made me realize that I can't obsess over my weight, it makes me depressed which makes me eat even more which totally defeats the purpose of the Effexor.

So. Thank you all, for all of your support. This blog has served it's purpose. I won't be updating here again.

Where Have I Been?

I've been hiding.

I've had Mountain Dew several times since my last post. And I have to tell you that, quite frankly, it sucks and I so much prefer Diet Coke. Sugared pop is gross. Isn't it amazing how your perceptions change? A year ago, I would have sneered at Diet Coke. Now, when I go to the restaurant that does not have Coke products, I drink Iced Tea.

I am not doing well with trying to lose weight. I am drinking my water but that's about it.

The bout of depression that I could feel coming on did just that. I have a vague sense of emptiness floating about me. It's not that I'm overly sad or want to die or anything, it's just this knowing that I am not happy and I have not been happy for a long time. It's not that I don't enjoy my life, I do, it's just that I have to force myself to enjoy it. There's something that tells me I don't deserve happiness. Which is stupid, I know. But hey, what are you going to do?

What I am going to do is this: I have made a doctor's appointment for Tuesday. I will be asking to be put back on Effexor. I remember the last time I was on Effexor and how much easier everything seemed to be. I was happy, I didn't eat all the time, I had energy because I was sleeping so much better. One little pill corrected a chemical imbalance and made things so much easier.

I know life shouldn't be this hard and I am looking forward to things being normal again. Wish me luck.

Falling off the wagon

I have been sick lately. Sore throat, stuffy nose (or running, at the most inconvenient times), coughing. I want to crawl into bed and not move for a month. But I can't because I work for a living and can't afford to lose my job.

On Tuesday or Wednesday, don't remember which, Keem and I went to Embers. Embers serves Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew has always been that thing that I go for when I'm not feeling good. It is, in it's own way, comfort food.

I asked the waitress to bring me a Mountain Dew, with a lot of ice. That made it not so bad, since it was watered down.

It was good to taste it again. To realize that Mountain Dew is not the ambrosia that I remember it to be. That I actually am beginning to prefer Diet Coke (with a lime slice, served by the delightful Bobby at The Chalet).

It felt good on my sore throat. The carbonation helped soothe the pain. It made my lackluster Lotsa Meat skillet and the lackluster service seem a little more sparkly than they actually were.

I've not been doing so well on my quest for better health and a better physical condition. I keep thinking about how I'm going to exercise, how I'm going to lose weight, how I'm going to be the best Dana I can be. And then I don't do anything.

Eh. At least I'm sick and don't have much of an appetite. That's something. I'll hopefully post again when I'm not feeling so blah.

Giving Up?

I'm not sure what's going on anymore. Yes, it's true, I've been able to give up Mountain Dew. I'm quite proud of that.

But I can't stick to anything else consistently.

I'm not exercising. I'm not cutting back on portions. I'm eating junk.

Why?

I know that giving up the Mountain Dew was the biggest step for me. I know that because of this, I haven't been going off on obsessive junk-food-filled binges of massive proportions (which, believe me, I have done before).

I'm only eating when I'm hungry, not because I'm depressed or bored or tired. At least I think I am.

Now I am looking at what I'm doing and am wondering why do I make the choices that I make, why do I do the things that I do? Why do I buy the donuts or the chips w/dip or the pizza instead of buying something healthy.

And I realize I am depressed, I am bored, I am tired. And I need to do something about it.

There once was a time when I was happy, where I was losing weight without even thinking about it, where I had energy and was, dare I say it, even a little bouncy. And this was when I was on Effexor and was dealing with the chemical imbalance that causes my depression.

With winter coming, I can't allow myself to fall into another depression. Especially since I also suffer from an odder version of bi-polar syndrom (or manic-depression, you pick) which is triggered by landmarks. In other words, I get depressed around my birthday. And this is because I had a former friend who used to say right around March 1st (my birthday's on the 11th) "Dana, you're going to be (insert number) years old on the 11th. What have you accomplished with your life?" And no matter what I said I was proud of, he would rip it apart. I wasn't smart enough or pretty enough or thin enough, I wasn't rich or famous or anything enough.

I've moved on, I have removed negative influences from my life, I have wonderful, spectacular friends who uplift me everyday...and yet, I can still hear his voice in the back of my head every once in awhile. "Dana, Dana, you're going to be 38 in March. What have you done? Are you married? Do you have children? Have you ever finished that book you started?"

And I sit there and look at my life and wonder what have I done? What have I accomplished? I'm not trying to depress anyone by writing this, I'm not asking for affirmations (well, not much anyway), I'm just trying to work this out in my mind.

I'm 37 years old, I am reasonably happy most of the time (maybe the word is content) but I still have inner voices telling me how pathetic I am. I had a pyschologist who figured out the landmark thing and who also told me that I should imagine that those voices are demons and then imagine that I am Xena, Warrior Princess and kick some demon ass.

I'm trying. But I think it might go better if I visit my doctor and get the Effexor again. Which means calling and setting up an appointment and figuring out if I want to use a full day of vacation or a half day (because I only have one day left this year). Which means riding the freakin' bus. God, I hate the bus.

Okay, enough whining for the day. I need to do something about this. I am not going to give up.

Was I bad? Was I good? You decide.

I do not know whether I should be ashamed of myself for yesterday or if I should be proud. Maybe a little of both.

Apparently, last night I was having issues. These are issues involving shopping when hungry. Never a good thing. So I bought a bag of chips and jalapeno cheddar dip and two (2!) of these really yummy Klondike Oreo ice cream sandwiches which are really yummy (did I mention they were yummy?) and I ate them! And 3 hot dogs. And a bagel, dripping with butter. Not a good thing.

I can say that there was no pop, there was the refreshing goodness of water. There was that slight twinge again, the one that looked at the Mountain Dew bottles. Then it looked at the Diet Coke with Lime bottles. And lusted briefly for both. But I said No! - quite firmly and said I would drink water. Yet I let myself be seduced by the siren call of all the fattening food I bought.

However, while watching CSI:, I grabbed the weights and started lifting them again. And then, during the commercials, I got up and started walking around the living room, carrying the weights, lifting them and walking briskly. I did this during commercials and even part of the show itself, both CSI: & Without A Trace.

It didn't hurt, I found my breathing was accelerated but not rapid, there was no asthma attack.

So, even though I did not make healthy choices when it came to food yesterday, I'm pleased about the exercise. This is big for me.

It was interesting that the Without A Trace episode was regarding a woman who hated the way she looked, had surgery on one of those reality shows (this one was called American Goddess) and ended up even more miserable than she had been when she started.

It gave me a lot of (please pardon the pun) food for thought. I know that I'll never be one of those women that obsesses over her appearance like this poor character did last night but I would like to be healthy. Right now? My goal is to get under 300 pounds. Who knows? Maybe I am already there. Probably not.

Lioness, you asked if my clothes were feeling looser. Yes and no. It depends on the piece of clothing. I usually like my shirts to be loose anyway so they are not a good way for me to determine anything. I think I may try measuring myself this weekend and then start tracking progress that way.

My ultimate goal is to weigh 180 again. That is what I weighed in high school and I looked good, I just didn't appreciate it because I was surrounded by size 4's. If I can get there, I will try to get to 150. That would mean I'd have to lose an entire person. That's going to be tough. But I can get there. I know I can do this.

Progress Report

I am pretty sure I have kicked the Mountain Dew addiction.

Case in point - sitting at dinner with Beth and her Dad and they both ordered Mountain Dew. There was a slight twinge, a twinge where I thought, "Y'know, I've been good for so long. Would it really hurt anything if I had a Mountain Dew?" And then I beat that twinge down and turned to the waitress and asked for an iced tea.

Yesterday Keem had a can of Mountain Dew and she showed it to me and I called her a bitch but I didn't really mean it. I didn't care that she had Mountain Dew. Okay, I cared a little but not really that much. Not enough to rip it out of her hands like I might have done oh, about a month ago when I was going crazy with the lack of my favorite beverage.

Last night, I took Steffany's advice and watched The Biggest Loser. It was very interesting. I'd have to say that I'm hooked, even though I wanted to kick that one guy, what was his name, Dave?, that said he was going to vote for what's his name, Roy and then he pulled up Lizzeth's name (You jackass, is all I have to say. That was cold. And then, when he's called on it, his response is "We're not curing brain cancer." Well, listen, this is serious stuff. Maybe it's not brain cancer but you supposed to be a role model for people. Role models don't play cheap little games. Whew. Okay, done vanting).

Anyway, while I'm sitting on the couch, watching these people who weigh close to what I do, if not more, running and lifting weights and exercising like mad, I couldn't take it. I practically ran to the bedroom and grabbed the one pound weights and started lifting them. I still have a lot of weight to lose before I'll be able to actually do some serious exercising without having an asthma attack but moving my arms around is not going to kill me. I was worried this would turn out like the last time I tried exercising, running through water, where I was so sore for three days after. But it wasn't. I feel good today, like I might have accomplished something.

Last night was tough for everyone on The Biggest Loser because they couldn't believe that they hadn't lost any weight. It was an eye opener for me because you can tell that none of them have ever been on a serious diet before, since they didn't realize that the previous week's loss had been due to water weight. It was really nice to see the trainers telling them that they had lost actual weight, not water weight, and they should absolutely not cut their calories again.

From what I can see, other than the "Hey, let's have a bunch of fat people deal with chocolate" stunt, this show is going to teach people a lot about the importance of good food and good exercise. I'll have to keep watching to see what happens and hopefully, get some more inspiration.

The fact that I'm not having Mountain Dew has been a serious help for me. I don't feel like I'm cheating when I make a bad choice. And it really makes me feel good when I choose to eat a salad or something else that's healthy.

I think my next step is to start exercising consistently. I am not looking forward to this, I hate effort. But, hey, if I could give up Mountain Dew, what could possibly stop me, right?

Shoes and Water

Have I mentioned that I love my new shoes? Yes. I love my shoes. They are a black suedeish material and they are tennis shoes but they are not tennis shoes. I know that does not make sense. They are this slip on type of shoe with half the bulk of actual tennis shoes.

And they are springy! Springy! I am bouncy while wearing them. This is not normal for me. I am not the bouncy type of person. Believe me when I tell you I am the dragging my feet, resisting type of person.

Anyway, the real reason for my post is that the exciting but evil shoes have made me feel energized, somewhat like that stupid bunny and that encouraged me to go swimming the other day when Jeff and Keem were going downstairs.

I like water, I really do like to swim but I am also very lazy and so, a lot of times when they'll ask me if I want to go downstairs, I'll say no. Or I can't go for health reasons. But Sunday, I was feeling really good about how well everything has been going for me with living Dew free and I decided it was time for the next step of my lifestyle change. The dreaded E word. E for effort or exercise or exertion.

Water aerobics are wonderful if you are overweight and have joint problems. You can do so many things in the water that you can't on land. You can do jumping jacks and leg lifts and actually jog in place.

And then, in your excitement, you start jogging around the pool. You don't think anything of it because it doesn't hurt and you're barely breaking a sweat and your asthma isn't choking you. It feels really good and is even fun.

Until the next morning when you get out of bed and want to cry because your calves, your poor, abused calves who have never felt like this before, start screaming because you actually really overdid it.

But, I'm going down to the pool again tonight. Maybe I won't be jogging this time. But my arms need some work so I think I'm sneaking down the 1 pound weights to add a kick to the resistance training. The jogging will take place in another day or two, once my calves get a little bit used to dealing with pain.

Anyway, wish me luck. I don't think I'll ever be one of those perky people that DeAnn had to deal with the other day but I'm going to try at least three times a week.

Okay, I forgot. Sorry.

I mentioned on my main site that I had a new post. Apparently I spoke too soon because, just as I was going to go and type away all that has been happening, I had to work. The suffering that one must face to bring in a paycheck. Awful.

Anyway, things are going very well. I am happy.

This is a big deal for me, being happy. I'm not normally. There's always something in the back of my mind going "Hey, Dana, you really suck. What the hell do you think you're doing?" That voice isn't there right now and I'm loving it.

Sunday, the day of the brunch (hmm, brunch) was a good day. There was not any bacon, or at least none that I could see, which is really, really a good thing. I am a bacon freak, I admit it freely. There are stories of going to brunches at the Machine Shed (seriously, this is actually the name of the restaurant) with Kari and Keem and I ate two full plates of bacon. Did I mention I love bacon? Anyway, there wasn't any bacon that I could see.

I had a huge salad with lots of carrots. I had a very good roast-like substance that I was told was prime rib. I had a teeny little portion of mashed potatoes without gravy or butter (believe me when I tell you that I used to eat mashed potatoes with both), I had more carrots, cooked this time, without butter. I completely bypassed the bread tray. This is not like me so I am assuming that I was planning on going back for bread and then just got distracted by the really good roasty thing.

And for dessert, I tried a little bit of each kind that was left. I did not continue to eat the desserts because I felt guilty that they were still on my plate.

Tonight, on the way home, I was talking to Keem about the thought that I might start wearing make-up again. Nothing major, just a little bit of eyeshadow and blush. I've noticed that when I start feeling better about myself, I start caring more about my appearance. I actually blow dried my hair today. It still looked like crap, because I didn't spend that much time on it, but I made the attempt. It felt good.

I am happy. I can't believe it. I know a lot of it has to do with the fact that I was seriously worn out about working at the banking call center and was overwhelmed by all of my responsibilities and yes, was probably extremely depressed but also, I'm feeling more in control of my life right now than I have in a long time.

Water, still not so great tasting. But it's growing on me.
I still make some not-so-great food choices but I don't obsess over it.
I'm not even sure what I would do with a Mountain Dew if you gave it to me right now. I seriously think I could say "Thanks, but no thanks." Isn't that great?

I have triumphed over Mountain Dew! I am cured! Cured of my addiction!

Okay, maybe cured is a little much but! But! I am so excited. I went to the restaurant where they have fountain Mountain Dew (ah, sweet elixer of Life) and I asked for water!

I know. I was shocked and/or stunned as well.

And then Mike took me to lunch on my last day and the waitress said "We have Pepsi products" and I did not say "I'd like a Mountain Dew." I said, "Could I have an Iced Tea?"

With the Pink Stuff (Sweet and Low) instead of sugar, iced tea is a refreshing, non-fattening drink. Water is still better. I should rephrase that. Water is still better for you than iced tea. It doesn't taste better.

The Melissa Etheridge Exercise Program

Friday night I went to the Melissa Etheridge concert and it was great. There was the small problem with the fact that The Orpheum and I disagree on what is considered a comfortable seat (Them: Oh, anyone who weighs less than 200 can comfortably sit in down in these seats. No one would weigh over 200 pounds. That's just craziness. Me: Oh, my God, I don't even think my thigh would fit in here!).

With a great deal of angling and holding my breath and saying "The heck with it! Pain doesn't matter! Really painful bruises on my thighs don't matter!" I was able to angle myself in such a manner that I could sit down but it was not comfortable. Hence the (mental) disagreement with The Orpheum (oh, but it's such a beautiful theatre. Glorious).

Beth said "Well, we'll be dancing a lot." I smiled and nodded. I don't dance. What I do is more of a rhythmic tapping that sort of moves up and down my legs. I will occasionally shuffle. Sometimes I get carried away and rapidly nod my head (may be sometimes construed as head banging). I don't raise my hands in the air because of problems I'm having with my left shoulder (although I wished that I had my weighted gloves with me because it would have been even better of a workout). I figured, once I got into the seat, there was no way you were getting me out of it. Uh-uh. No, sir. No how.

And then Melissa Etheridge walked out onto the stage. And she began to sing. And rock. And roll. And I stood up and started moving. I couldn't help it. I still didn't dance but there was a whole lot of rhythmic tapping going on.

After a while, my legs started to hurt and I sat down again. Still painful, still angled but having such a great time from the music I didn't care. I sat down for two songs. And then she started rocking again. I was back up and moving around again, singing my heart out.

Later on Melissa started playing The Weakness In Me, a slower song. I sat down again, expecting a battle of the bulge. Imagine my shock when I sat straight down in the chair. No angling required. Still a little painful because part of me was spilling over into the next chair (thank God we had an extra seat) but I was sitting down.

I've decided that, once I buy all of her albums (I'll start with Lucky), I'm going to play a CD every other day to start. You can't help but move when you listen to her. If I'm moving, that's a heck of a lot more exercise than I get in a normal day.

So here I am, still sore and bruised), still tired, but still rocking and buzzed from the energy. So buzzed that, after the concert, when we went to Perkins, I asked for water instead of Diet Coke. Believe me when I say that is not like me.

Hoping your day is rocking as well.

And nary a drop to drink

Keem and I went to Wal-Mart yesterday, after much whining on my part ("But Keem! I have to go to Wal-Mart." "Why?" "I need stuff."). We ended up spending over an hour there.

Keem tried to do the "I'm putting my foot down. We have one cart. And I'm pushing it." routine. But, in the end, I triumphed and was allowed to have my own cart.

For those of you who are thinking Keem is a mean person for telling me what to do, I would like to, in her defense, give you an idea of what shopping is like with me.

Imagine a child. Five years old. Has no concept of time. Likes to wander off and look at stuff. Pouts if she doesn't get her own way (but doesn't cry because she's not a baby). Will occasionally stomp her feet. Will vanish and not be able to tell you where she was when you finally find her. Or will misplace you and then say "I've been looking for you forever" but has never actually left the section she is in.

Now, make the child 37 (wait, am I 38 now? I have suddenly forgotten. 2004 take away 1967 is 37. Okay) and you have me. I am easily distracted, forget where things are and will fib creatively, if it means I can spend five more minutes in the toy (book/electronics/you name it) section.

Anyway, we spent a long time at Wal-Mart. We were leaving and I thought "Oh, I wish I would have bought a water. I'm thirsty." When I drank Mountain Dew, I was never actually thirsty. Apparently, that's not good. You're supposed to get thirsty. You're supposed to drink water, apparently half of your body weight in water. I couldn't do it when I was on the Dew. I thought 8 ounces of water was too many, let alone 8 glasses of water.

Well, now, I get thirsty. Horribly. And I was thirsty yesterday, standing in the lobby at the pop machine, hoping for water. None to be had. Well, it's not too far to home. I'll be okay if I just have something wet. I'll get a root beer.

I get in the car, start drinking the root beer and want to throw up.

I love root beer. I always have. My Dad used to get the kits and make root beer at home. I don't even have a favorite root beer. I like A&W, Hires, Barq's. It doesn't really matter.

This stuff, the Wal-Mart version, was awful. I thought "Did I get a bad can?"

No. I tried Keem's grape pop, same reaction. What's going on?

It finally hits me. I haven't had full flavor (as I like to call non-diet pop) pop in almost a month. I'm reacting to the sugar. I think sugared pop is disgusting now. I guess it's a good thing.

Today, the Mountain Dew bottle was right there. Right within my grasp. I told it no (in my head, not out loud) and walked away. I'm very proud of myself. I still don't think I could resist fountain Mountain Dew yet but I'm proud of the steps I'm making now.

Mountain Dew, how I love thee

I was going to write an ode to Mountain Dew but I decided that would just be silly.

Anyway, I started this blog on 9/6/04. I have officially been Mountain Dew free since the 4th. I have learned to embrace water as my friend (well, acquaintance, really) and drank half a gallon so far today.

I still avoid the restaurant in our building because they serve fountain Mountain Dew, which is sweet, sweet ambrosia and always will be to me. I don't know if I'm strong enough to resist it.

This reminds me, oddly enough, of when I decided to stop smoking pot. I was fine, as long as I didn't smell it. I stopped hanging around friends because I knew they would just want to get me high. I backslid many a time but have been pot free for at least three years now.

I suspect this is what many people go through when they try to give up something. Giving up alcohol was not a problem for me. I don't like to drink, unless, of course, it's a mudslide, because, if you're going to drink alcohol, there should be chocolate. I guess I must not have been addicted to it. Who knew that Mountain Dew could have more of a hold on me than booze? That's kind of funny.

Anyway, I'm doing good. I really appreciate all the comments and emails I've received. It amazes me how good I feel about myself, even when I have a piece of candy or decide lunch is going to be a small bag of cookies (vending size). Most of the time, I make healthy choices. I just choose to indulge myself once in awhile. I stop eating when I'm full. I don't eat if I'm depressed.

I tried on a freshly washed pair of pants today, normally they are pretty tight. I think they're looser. I have no idea if I've lost any weight, I just feel healthier.

Yesterday

Yesterday was not a good day. I did not make good choices. For lunch, I had two slices of pizza (because one was sausage and one was pepperoni. I can never decide which meat I like better. If they would have made a sausage/pepperoni pizza, I would have been okay with one) and then I realized that they had made my absolute favorite salad, cashew chicken salad (except why the grapes? Grapes and chicken do not belong together. It is a horrid travesty of food) and the tuna salad I like and ooh, look, there are green olives.

I justified it by thinking I was going to be at work all night (hanging out with Beth) and wouldn't eat again until after 11:30. Of course, I was completely stuffed and had a hard time moving for a little while and wanted to take a nap under my desk. So I ate some chocolate.

And then we went to IHOP, where I devoured 3 pancakes with syrup and sausage links and hashbrowns with cheese.

But! I did not have Mountain Dew (and believe me when I say I want it. So much. I avoided going out to eat the other day because they serve Mountain Dew. From a soda fountain. Which is the ultimate of the ultimate drink for me). And I continue to drink water. And I've had salads every day this week. So, I am weak but yet, I am also strong. I don't feel guilty. Amazing. Usually this would set me off on a downward spiral of bingeing followed by guilt followed by excessive bingeing.

I am quite flushed with victory right now.

The oddness that is my psyche

When you dream of having someone's tongue in your mouth, you kind of hope it's attached to them. But, oh, no, not me. No, I get to have the freaky non-kissing dreams.

The Dream

Beth, Keem, Matt and I are living in a house (I am assuming that Matt's kids and lover are also living with us but hey, you never know) and there is this woman who is watching over us. A caretaker, for some reason. And she has these sons who decide to perform surgery on me.

I am complaining to her about how her sons, in their infinite wisdom, performed some sort of tongue graft.

She replies "But they did a good job. They fixed your tongue."

I step outside of the calm and rational person that I normally am (yes, yes, laugh away) and respond with "Ah, no! No, they didn't. My tongue wasn't broken. Look, look what they did to me!" I stick my tongue out at her and there, haphazardly sewn on, is a portion of someone else's tongue on mine. And, to add insult to injury, they left the sewing needle inside my tongue. I pull it out to demonstrate. Which sounds really gross but there was no blood. End of dream.

When I wake up, I have a sharp pain in my tongue. I immediately check to make sure no one's tongue is attached to it. I tell Beth the dream and we think I must have bitten my tongue in my sleep. She pulls out the dream book.

Tongues - Having an extra long tongue: trying to overcome a nervous habit.

Sewing needles - You love too much.

Consider this - the night of this dream was the night I made the decision to overcome my obsessive love for food and Mountain Dew. Apparently that translates into having someone else's tongue in your mouth.

Dreams are weird.

No Dew at the Zoo

Yesterday Keem, Beth and I went to the Como Zoo. It was a lot of fun walking about with friends, taking pictures, looking at gorgeous plants and animals.

It completely wore me out though, since exercise is not my friend. I am sitting here today, aches and pains pinging back and forth across my body. But I feel good. It's been over a week since I had Mountain Dew.

There was a brief moment of regret when I walked in and one of my bankers had a bottle of Mountain Dew. I considered wrestling it from him but then thought better of it. Don't particularly want to go down in NABABNA history as the supervisor who beat of her banker for a bottle of pop.

I had an order of cheese curds and a personal size pepperoni pizza with my Diet Coke yesterday. Zoo food doesn't run towards the overly nutritious. Which is part of the fun, I guess. Beth was laughing at the way I ate my pizza. I ate one quarter and the cheese and pepperoni off the other 3 quarters. I don't particularly like thick pizza and love cheese and pepperoni. Even typing pepperoni is fun. Pepperoni, pepperoni, pepperoni.

The best part of the day was being there, with my friends, enjoying the zoo. A few aches and pains can't ruin that feeling. It was a good day.

No Dew for me!

It has been almost a week since I had a Mountain Dew. I am now sitting here with my gallon bottle of Ice Mountain Natural Spring Water. It's pure as the driven snow, just look at their website. Just exactly what is driven snow? Does anyone else wonder about that? Or is it just me?

Anyway, today I wanted a Dew, since I start work at 5:30 AM and the morning is not my friend. But I didn't get one. Instead, I bought the water jug which has been a source of amusement. Since it's the "clear bottle!" The word clear is used four times in three sentences. Apparently the clear bottle is very important to the good folks at Ice Mountain.

I do not understand why there are so many different water companies. It's water. It's boring. It has no taste (well, if you're lucky. If you live in the city, that's another story). And why is Evian twice as much as Aquafina? I need to know these things.

Here's another question, is sparkling water the same as mineral? I hate mineral water and am afraid to buy sparkling water because I'm worried about this.

Support System

I just want to say thank you.

To Beth, Matt, Keem and Adam - Thank you for being friends that don't feel the need to make me cry. I appreciate it. Having you guys around makes my life so much more amazing.

To DeAnn - Thank you for your support and for telling me what glarkware is. I was very confused and now, now I know! It's so great. I like to know what the cool kids are doing.

To Firebear - You have no idea what your comment meant to me. You made me cry. And then, when I told Beth what you said, she cried as well. It was very sweet.

To Robert~Marlene - If I can someday look as classy as you, I will be happy. I love the new picture of Marlene. Yours was the first blog I commented on and I read it regularly.

To Angi - Your observation skills astound me! Your knitting amazes me! You are spectacular and your ex-husband is a dork who doesn't deserve you. Hot Delivery Boy better deserve you or he will be tangling with me. You make me laugh. That's always a good thing.

Day Three or Four or, well, I have no clue anymore, it's all a blur without my beloved, sweet Mountain Dew

Okay. The title sums it up. I miss Mountain Dew. I have managed to remain strong and resist the siren's song.

The whole point to Living Dew Free is to make good choices. I once went to a nutritionist who told me that I could probably lose a pound to two pounds a week if I just cut out full sugar pop. Did I listen? No. Do I regret it? No. Regret those glorious years I spent with my beautiful, beautiful Mountain Dew. Never.

Do I regret all the times I let emotions rule me and would stuff my face because of something some jackass said to me? Yes.

Now that I have finally learned to eat only when I am hungry, now that I don't let emotions take over, now that I have decent friends who don't think it's hilarious to see me cry, I look at myself in the mirror and wonder what the hell happened.

I don't want to be a stick. I'm not looking to be the next super model. I look at pictures of me back in high school and wonder why did I let things get out of control like this? At 18, I weighed 180 pounds, I wore a size 16 or 18 and I looked damn good. I had curves and actual cleavage (ah, cleavage, I miss you most of all).

But I got depressed. And I ate. And my boyfriend, lying, cheating scum that he was, left me to move to Oregon. And I ate. And I fell in with a crowd of people I would not associate with today and continued my exploration with drugs. And I got the munchies.

It was a vicious circle. I saw a doctor a few years back who talked about the fact that I have a lot of testosterone in my blood. It's caused by my excess weight. And the problem with having the excess testosterone (aside from the hairy arms and toes and "stray eyebrows") means that it's difficult for me to lose weight. This was a great guy. He looks me straight in the eye and says "It's not fair. It's a vicious circle. But you can do something about it." But then I saw the other doctor who made this big production about my weight and called me disgusting. And I went home discouraged and I ate.

So here's the thing. It's not fair. It is a vicious circle. But now I'm going to break it.

I don't have a scale. I'm not counting points or giving up carbs. I'm just making choices. I'm Living Dew Free so that means I may decide I want that piece of pie. Or bacon. Oh, sweet bacon, how I love thee (bacon's not really sweet but you get my point). But on the other hand, it may mean that I have a salad for lunch for the last 3 days.

I'm the type of person who can't diet. If I think I'm on a diet, I start to get depressed and feel like I'm starving and then I start bingeing. And then I start feeling guilty. And you know what happens, I'm back in my vicious circle again.

So. I'm not on a diet. I'm making some changes to my life. I'm Living Dew Free.
